Tropical Poolside

Client goals:

  • Create a poolside garden that evokes a tropical vacation, but survives Pittsburgh’s winters

  • Attract butterflies and support local pollinators

  • Ensure low-maintenance upkeep

  • Safe and comfortable for family and guests around the pool

Site constraints:

  • Cold-hardy planting required for Pittsburgh’s climate

  • Limited space near pool deck

  • Non-invasive species to prevent spreading beyond the bed

  • Exposure to full sun and occasional pool splash

  • Avoid plants that could scratch or irritate barefoot pool guests

Solutions:

  • Selected hardy perennials with bold foliage, exotic leaf shapes, and bright blooms to achieve a tropical effect

  • Supplemented with seasonal annuals for added color and continuous bloom

  • Arranged multiple viewpoints around the pool to create an immersive tropical experience

  • Chose non-invasive and soft-textured species to ensure safety and ease of maintenance
